ICTP Director Miguel A. Virasoro attended the first meeting of the Asian Pacific Centre for Theoretical Physics' (APCTP) Science Council. Three years in the making, APCTP, headquartered in Seoul, Korea, is modelled after the ICTP. Among other items, the Science Council discussed the APCTP's 1998 calendar, which will include a school on string theory and a workshop on condensed matter. Like the ICTP, APCTP's mandate is to serve as "a centre of excellence for research in theoretical physics and a centre for the training of theoretical physicists at the post-doctoral and doctoral levels." Virasoro was appointed to the APCTP's first Science Council this year and will serve in that position until 1999. APCTP's President is Nobel Laureate C.N. Yang.
