WHAT IS ICTP?

ICTP is an institute dedicated to research and high-level training in pure and applied physics and mathematics—and related fields—particularly for the benefit of developing countries. Founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam (1926-1996), ICTP is administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. ICTP's Director is Fernando Quevedo.

WHO STUDIES AT ICTP?

As its mandate suggests, ICTP helps to foster the growth of advanced studies and research in physical and mathematical sciences, especially in developing countries. Research and training activities take place at the post-graduate level. Our visitors are both young and experienced scientists who come to the Centre seeking to advance and hone their knowledge and skills. ICTP research activities are meant to assist them in these goals.

WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS?

  • Degree in physics or mathematics: The minimum degree level necessary for taking part in ICTP research activities is an M.Sc. (or equivalent), plus at least two years’ experience. The only exception is the Diploma Course, which requires the equivalent of an M.Sc. degree or of a British B.Sc. (Hons.) degree.
  • English is the working language at ICTP; therefore, good knowledge of specialized English is necessary.

WHAT DOES ICTP OFFER?

The ICTP enables scientists from developing countries to participate in its activities often by paying for their living expenses and contributing to their travel expenses. Tuition is free. Most research and training activities take place at ICTP in Trieste, Italy. Visitors may find accommodation in our guesthouses or in flats in town. ICTP activities include:
